Permegrid PG40 gravel and grass pavers are an interlocking permeable paving grid system for ground reinforcement and grass applications where there is regular pedestrian or vehicle use.

What is permegrid?

Permegrid40 grass pavers are a cost effective solution to worn & rutted grassed areas, displaced gravel and for Source Control of surface water run-off. Our paving grids are designed to be installed onto a well prepared, free-draining and relatively even surface using either a ‘Reduced-Dig System’ or by employing a full sub-base construction incorporating a Permetex reinforcement layer.

The permeable reinforcement paving grids simply connect together and are filled with an angular gravel for use as a gravel retention reinforcement permeable surface. Construction profiles for each application will be determined by the specific site conditions & loading criteria.

Alternatively Permegrid40 can be filled with sand as an equestrian surface or soil root zone and seeded for use as a grassed surface giving a strong durable surface but aesthetically pleasing.

Customise your reinforcement project with the right materials for the job

Permegrid is just one part of the ground reinforcement package. Every layer plays an important part in the reinforcement process.

Aggrigate Layers

A 6-14mm durable, decorative, angular gravel, granite or limestone chipping (carboniferous limestone only), a 10mm product being ideal for Permegrid PG40.

As well as a long lasting durable finish your project needs to be aesthetically pleasing, you will be driving over it and/or looking out on to it every day. You will want it to enhance your home, property or business so please take time in choosing the right colour and textured gravel or chipping for your requirements.

We do not recommend using any products with fines as a finished layer, this will prevent permeation and is not recommended for a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS).

We have put together a selection of products we know would be suitable for a wide range of permeable applications and preferences, with this in mind you are able to choose which product fits best with your project and lifestyle.

Geo Textile Layer

Drivetex - A heavy duty non-woven geotextile fabric providing the best performance in ground stabilisation, filtration and drainage.

Drivetex is a professional driveway fabric, to be used beneath MOT Type 3 aggregate or hardcore in a sub-base layer. It prevents sinking and rutting caused by settlement of aggregate into the soil beneath (sub-grade) – a process known as pumping.

This high-quality product does not loose strength when used below ground, making it the No1 choice for driveways, roads and other areas subjected to vehicular traffic. Drivetex can also be used for the construction of land drains (French drains), for wrapping soakaway crates and most importantly as a SUDS layer in a permeable *pavement construction.

Type 3 Sub Base Layer

A Type 3 or Type X crushed angular granite or limestone provides the best performance within a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) construction.

The sub-base layer is often the main load bearing layer of a *pavement and should never be underestimated. It is designed to evenly spread the load of the paving, and any traffic thereon, to the sub-grade (soil) below.

Just a few centimetres of the correct sub-base material compacted in the right way can turn an unreliable, rut prone sub-grade into a surface capable of carrying cars and larger vehicles. This is achieved by ‘load spreading’ the granular material dissipates the point loads over a significantly wider area and so enables quite considerable loads to be supported without settlement and permanent distortion.

Type 3 or Type X is a 40mm product that has been screened to create a reduced fines aggregate (but not Zero fines). These products are fully certified according to the specification for highways works. This is the most widely used sub-base where fewer fines are required such as sub-bases for sports pitches, equestrian surfaces, driveways, shed and building bases and general vehicle and pedestrian access routes where blockage of drains or natural drainage is an issue. Type 3 or Type X is widely used as an approved sub-base where Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) legislation is imposed when constructing a permeable surface. In order for the product to be classed as a ‘Type 3’ quality it must comply with the Department of Transport Specification for Highway Works, clause 805 (SHW805).

Here at Permegrid we will only supply Type 3 aggregate within a Permegrid package or project, other products can be supplied where a SUDS or permeable layer is not required.

Permegrid is the most important layer. Years in the making and engineered to provide the most support this layer helps to disperse the weight of traffic while allowing proper drainage of surface water. When we developed Permegrid our first priority was to use 100% British recycled plastic, our commitment to environmentally friendly projects is important to our business. We wanted to make a product that is compliant with drainage requirements to minimise the environmental impact.

It’s not just environmentally friendly, it’s very strong. Permegrid’s hexagonal structure gives it a high weight distribution capability, it’s able to support 250-320 tonnes/m², on a correctly specified and compacted sub-base. This weight carrying ability makes it ideal for heavy traffic areas like construction sites and access roads. The plastic we use is durable as well as UV and weather resistant giving Permegrid an expected product life in excess of 10-15 years.

The geotextile layer helps to keep your reinforcement in place. Its hard wearing structure compliments the toughness of Permegrid while maintaining the drainage of the area. This layer helps to keep each other layer together. It helps prevent the heavy aggregate layers sinking into the soil below and stops the surface layers sinking down below the grid below.

We also offer cosmetic options for your surface layer. We can provide a choice of different coloured aggregates or grass seed options. This makes your reinforced ground blend in with your surrounding land. The variety of coloured aggregates can be picked from our product customiser, and we calculate your needs based on the area you need to cover.

The sub-base gives the grid the bulk of its strength. It helps to distribute the weight of traffic on the Permegrid above while still allowing water to drain through. This course aggregate layer varies in depth depending on your expected traffic, which is why our project calculator lets you specify how much of this layer you need. For a shed base or light foot traffic we recommend a thinner layer, however for heavy commercial traffic or temporary structures we can provide high tonnage loads of aggregates to properly support your reinforcement needs.

The bedding layer is the first support layer for the surface materials you choose, it also allows the permegrid to sit on a smooth surface layer, making leveling the grid easier.
